Founded in 2019 in the Hague by Martín Mayo, Warekes began as a meeting place for musical traditions. Rooted in folkloric melodies and rhythms native to Venezuela, the band forges verses about the human experience and against social injustice in all its forms.
It is in this liminal space that Warekes grows the New Folklore, a conscientious yet universally familiar sound, calling out oppression as well as reflecting on the importance of friendship, love and the little things that make every day feel a bit more special. Warekes’ first album, Everyday Wonders, is about these little moments and rituals that so many of us share, things like making coffee in the morning (“Café mañanero”) or biking home at 3 AM after a party (“Madrugatonada”), or even tuning our instruments (“Cambur pintón”).
For this special concert in the Batavierhuis, Warekes will transport you deep into the lush embrace of the South American jungle. Feel the humid air come alive with the distant melodic calls of frogs, the mesmerizing rhythms of raindrops dancing on canes, and the timeless, soulful chants of ancient voices. Opgericht in 2019 in Den Haag door Martín Mayo, begon Warekes als een ontmoetingsplek voor muzikale tradities. Geworteld in folkloristische melodieën en ritmes uit Venezuela, smeedt de band verzen over de menselijke ervaring en tegen sociale onrechtvaardigheid in al haar vormen.
In deze overgangsruimte groeit Warekes het Nieuwe Folklore: een bewust maar universeel herkenbaar geluid dat onderdrukking aanklaagt, maar ook stilstaat bij de waarde van vriendschap, liefde en de kleine dingen die het leven bijzonder maken.
