In this concert you will hear classical Ottoman pieces, some Black Sea, Greek and Catalan traditional songs, and original compositions inspired by them.
The power of the resonance of the strings and the non temperate melodies are some of the elements in common in all the styles mentioned previously.
It will be our own version and interpretation of music that has been played for centuries.

I am Laia, a Batavier, and the last years I have been researching on how changing the way of playing the viola to get closer to the sound of middle eastern bowed instruments, also observing the relation between Ottoman, Greek and Black Sea melodies with the melodies of the songs I grew up with (Catalaan folk songs) –perhaps, comparing and relating as a way of embodying something new–.

One of the elements that has been captivating me is the power of resonance that strings have and how you can with one instrument play a melody in one string and at the same time accompany it with a drone with the other strings, making the melody and the drone become one.
This feature happens, in fact, in many musical traditions, such as in Scandinavian and in French folk, which I have been listening since very young age and which have, inevitably, also influenced the melodies I have been composing.
There are similarities on how bowed instruments are played in different traditions, and I could continue talking about this, but I think, better come and listen to the music.

I am very glad to have put together three fantastic greek string players who have been inspiring me and who have made this mixed repertoire become blended in a common sound. Each of these three musicians have their own musical background, which is, actually, also reflected in how the pieces have been arranged, and they are : Yvonni MELISSA from Kavala, Vasilis LEMONIAS from the bay of Volos and Kiriakos MANIAS from the island of Crete.

OPENING ACT: THRÓISMA TRIO
Thróisma is a vocal group created by three Greek musicians — Yvonne Melissa, Vanessa Kourtesi, and Pinelopi Tseliou.

Thróisma is inspired by the greek word “Θρόισμα”which means: ‘The sound of the rustling leaves”. The trio writes original music inspired by the sounds of the nature and explores the rich textures of Greek polyphonic music, rebetiko and more contemporary sounds, making the project a culture blend.

Tōth
Brooklyn-based songwriter and trumpet player Tōth (Alex Toth) returns with his third album – And The Voice Said (February 27, 2026). Tōth is known for their emotionally direct songwriting, magnetic stage presence and trumpet playing. Their new album was co-produced by Grammy nominated artist Caroline Rose and features Kimbra. This record finds Tōth fully blossomed with his most potent work yet.

Marta Arpini
Marta Arpini is an Italian singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in the Netherlands. With a background in jazz and a flair for indie, folk and chamber pop, her music blends dreamy melodies, bold arrangements and evocative lyrics – all carried by her intimate, expressive voice. Her albums “Forest Light”, “I Am a Gem”, and “Tender Superpower” earned Edison Award nominations and praise for their originality and emotional depth.

Since its founding in 2022, The New Choir has rapidly built a distinctive presence on both stage and record. The choir has performed sold-out shows at venues including Paradijskerk in Rotterdam and Tempel Amsterdam, and has collaborated with a wide range of artists. The New Choircan be heard on Human, a track from Roufaida’s latest album, and appeared as the choir for Belgian hip-hop duo blackwave. alongside Koen Wauters (Clouseau) in a sold-out Lotto Arena in Antwerp. In November 2024, blackwave. released a live version of Elusive featuring The New Choir — a song that was also performed live with the choir at Pukkelpop past summer for an audience of over 15,000 people. In the spring of 2025, the choir joined forces with indie-folk legend I am Oak for a live version of Dreamt of You.

About Aura:
Aura Rascón is a Mexican / Dutch flutist and composer coming from a background in
traverse flute and music pedagogy in Western classical music (BA from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria). Being the first formal disciple from Latinoamerica of Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, she learned formally from him at the Conservatory of Rotterdam (BA & MA), The Netherlands, and traditionally at his Vrindaban Gurukul ashrams in India. She has been privileged to accompany her Guru in concerts in Europe, USA, Latinoamerica and India. She has toured extensively as a soloist, as a guest artist and as well with her own projects at mayor venues and festivals in Asia, Europe and Latinoamerica and has been featured in National Radio and Television in Mexico, Argentina, France, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, including for official projects of the Embassy of India.

About Shabbir:
Shabbir Hussain is one of the youngest talented Tabla players of today. He is born in 1981 in the family of illustrious Tabla player Ustad Hidayat Khan Ustad Rehman Khan of Sikar. He is inheriting arts of his forefather and representing the 3rd generation of Tabla players from Sikar. It is worthwhile to note that Sikar is known after the name of Ustad Hidayat Khan sahab a maestro Tabla player. Shabbir Hussain started Tabla at the of seven and got the basic training under his father till he attained the adolescence. Later on to acquire the excellence, he went to learn from Ustad Hidayat Khan, who is incidentally his uncle and also the Guru of his father. As a result of his hard work and the proper guidance of his Ustad Hidayat Khan he got the 'B High' grade from A.I.R. in 2002. He won several prizes and awards like Surnoor in 1997, Omkar Nath in 1998 in junior and senior in 1999 and Taal Mani in 2000. He performed in many esteemed concerts like Sankalp Delhi-Puna in 1999, Haridas Sangeet Sammelan Mumbai in 2000, Sur Shringar Mumbai in 2000, South zone festival, Sangali in 2001 also with a Indo European Fusion Group in Banaras. Lukhnow, Jaipur, Jodhpur in 2003, Gujrat Sangeet Natak Academic in Ahmadabad in 2002. He is regular performing in SAPTAK festival Ahmadabad since 1996 till today. Shabbir Hussain has performed solo as well as accompanied with well known artist of vocal, instrument Kathak dance and Taal Kacheri. He has worked with several kathak-groups, dance-groups and fusion-groups. He has performed in various countries in abrode such as Holland, France, Belgium, Germany, Swiss, etc. Since the year 2002 until today, He is well known as a soloist. His style is exuberant and at the same time his touch is both delicate and sensitive. He is also promoting the music of Sikar Gharana, which is created by his uncle Guru Ustad Hidayat Khan Sahab.

Jurriaan de Kok is a versatile bassist, double bassist, and composer with a broad musical
horizon and a distinctive artistic voice. As a performing musician, he moves effortlessly
between jazz, improvisation, pop, and cross-over projects. This constant shift between
genres, ensembles, and musical worlds forms an important source of inspiration in both his
playing and compositions.

As a composer, Jurriaan often creates atmospheric and narrative-driven music, in which
personal experiences, memories, and moments from everyday life serve as the guiding
thread. His compositions are marked by a cinematic sense of layering: intimate and
restrained when needed, yet also powerful, rhythmic, and compelling. During Sounding
Here, he presents a solo program featuring mainly original work, with the double bass taking
center stage as a storytelling and surprisingly versatile instrument.

Blurring the edges of jazz, improvisation and composition, guitarist Jelle Roosenburg and tabla player Tarang Poddar weave an ambient, shadow-tinted soundscape. They present original music that takes the listener on unexpected places, surprising you with their temporary refuge in spaces like fierce Indian Rhythms, Jazz improvisation, and songs also
reminiscent of Morrocon Folklore. Their dialogue – poised between chaos, order and mystery unfolds as a charged encounter, leaving the audience captivated and enthrilled of

As the kick-off of Dag van de Componist in Rotterdam, Ensemble Oihua and cellist Maya Fridman present an evening dedicated to contemporary music by Rotterdam-based composers. Set in the atmospheric Paradijskerk, the programme features solo works, chamber music, electroacoustic works and one world premiere.

The concert opens with Cárceles y Exilios by Saskia Venegas for solo cello and electronics, a work exploring memory, testimony and historical silence. The evening continues through intimate piano music, solo performances and immersive sound worlds where acoustic instruments merge with electronics. The programme also includes the world premiere of You’ve been invited to contact your deepest Self by Kaori Neus, a new work for violin, bass clarinet and piano.

Together, the concert highlights the diversity, imagination and experimental spirit of Rotterdam’s contemporary music scene.

Dutch and Portuguese vocal students dive into the world of Portuguese Fado. After a period of lessons preparing their repertoire, they will sing their Fados for family and friends.

During this open concert, they present their favourite Fados, accompanied by professional musicians. Even those who have never stood on a stage before will present their own Fado during this open lesson.

The atmosphere resembles a traditional Fado house, with dim lights, small tables, and a respectfully quiet audience. Silence, the Fado will be sung!

Samen met Koen Schalkwijk en Alessandro Fongaro onderzoekt hij een muzikale wereld waarin tijd en vorm langzaam lijken op te lossen. De muziek ontstaat vanuit een rauwe en directe setting: op 25 juni 2026 wordt het nieuwe materiaal bij Epic Rainbow Unicorn Studios live opgenomen op analoge tape en VHS. Als publiek ben je uitgenodigd om hier van dichtbij bij aanwezig te zijn, te ervaren hoe de muziek intuïtief ontstaat en direct op het moment wordt vastgelegd.

During North Sea Round Town, SUBOTSKY brings new work live to the stage. Over the past year, the Rotterdam-based band developed new material and live videos from Batavierhuis for upcoming releases. With Helene Matthia (vocals), Cengiz Arslanpay (modular synths, zurna), Dean Montanaro (bass) and Philipp Ernsting (drums), the band creates a genre-crossing mix of unclassified garagefolk and otherworldly grooves. Influences from Turkey, Germany and Malta run through the collectively written compositions, where free and structured elements continuously exist side by side.

He builds his music around a jazz piano trio, balancing between contemporary jazz, Greek folk and cinematic music. Following his earlier releases Laros (2023) and Sigá y Silente (2024), “A Sea In Common” continues Bereris’s personal story-shaping through composition and ensemble sound.

North Sea Round Town joins forces with Batavierhuis, a creative hub located in the monumental building at Coolhaven, to present a new concert series at this and other unique locations. The series showcases the Batavieren and their latest projects, offering a platform for fresh ideas and artistic exploration. Expect a diverse line-up featuring exciting collaborations, unexpected twists, and musical stories that move, surprise, and inspire.

'A Sea In Common' is het nieuwe project van pianist en componist Yiorgos Bereris. Het is geïnspireerd door de geluiden die hem zijn bijgebleven tijdens zijn reizen door de Middellandse Zee en de Balkan, door gesprekken met mensen die door het leven gaan in een constante zoektocht, stilte dragend maar vol hoop. De tussenmomenten waarin alles vertraagt en je je verbeelding de vrije loop laat.

Hij bouwt zijn muziek rond een jazzpianotrio, balancerend tussen hedendaagse jazz, Griekse folk en filmische muziek. Na zijn eerdere releases Laros (2023) en Sigá y Silente (2024), zet “A Sea In Common” Bereris’ persoonlijke vormgeving van verhaal en ensemblesound verder voort.

In Under Pressure: The Four Seasons, Rewritten presenteren batavier Aleksandra Tonelli en Cocoliche Trio nieuwe composities die de seizoenen vanuit een hedendaags perspectief verkennen, met reflecties op klimaatverandering en natuurrampen. Geïnspireerd door seizoensmuziek uit beide hemisferen, van Piazzolla en Gismonti tot Tsjaikovski en Brad Mehldau, herinterpreteert het project de seizoenen in een opwarmende wereld en vertelt het een unieke muzikale reis. De première vindt plaats bij NSRT met een nieuw repertoire voor een aankomend album. Daarmee zet Cocoliche een gedurfde stap als moderne jazz-crossoverformatie, waarin Zuid-Amerikaanse folklore, klassieke traditie en jazzimprovisatie samenkomen, resonant met het eclectische en diverse geluid van Rotterdam.

De band speelde de afgelopen jaren op podia door heel Europa, waaronder Freakshow Festival 2024, PonavaFest 2025 en Herzberg Festival 2025. Elke show is een explosieve samenkomst van improvisatie, dynamiek en vier uitgesproken persoonlijkheden die sterk, impulsief en onmogelijk te negeren zijn.

Voor dit concert in het Batavierhuis brengt HALA nieuw en zich ontwikkelend materiaal, waaronder werk van de aankomende vinylrelease AUA, in een intieme setting.

This three-day workshop brings together musicians from diverse genres, instruments and artistic contexts to explore how movement can support playing, rehearsing, composing, creating and performing. Through practical sessions combining multiple approaches to movement and sound, participants will work individually and collectively to deepen sensory awareness, expand attention, and develop greater freedom of expression. The focus is on widening artistic practice — strengthening connection to instrument, body, collaborators, audience and the shared space in which music happens.

For this workshop, Resonanzlehre trainer Yanna Pelser joins forces with the movement coaches from Moving Strings & Play As We Are. These are interconnected artistic and educational initiatives that place body and movement at the center of music-making, rehearsal, and performance. Founded by Maya Felixbrot and developed together with Alex Welch and Alexandra Baybutt, they create experimental spaces for somatic sound practices and interdisciplinary artistic research.

Cubaanse muziek, bolero’s, verschillende soorten tango en Spaanse volksmuziek uit Galicië en Extremadura vloeien in elkaar over via eigen arrangementen en ritmische interactie. Het programma bevat ook composities van Tacora zelf, geïnspireerd door dezelfde mix van roots, landschappen en muzikale ontmoetingen.

Via grooves, melodieën en texturen wisselen de vier cello’s van rol door te begeleiden, te zingen en het ritme te dragen. De cellisten van Tacora verkennen nieuwe klankmogelijkheden van het instrument, en vervagen uiteindelijk tot iets vitaals, gloeiends en levends onder de oppervlakte.

Tracing the roots of their musical ideas is part of the joy of listening, as Tarang Poddar and Juliano Abramovay push each other’s boundaries through virtuosity, cultural intelligence and fantasy; the result of years of experimenting and playing together.​

Next to his guitar, Juliano plays the oud (a Middle Eastern lute), and Tarang adds his mastery of konnakol, the traditional art of vocal percussion. Their infectious energy draws you in, and the intimate setting will make you feel effortlessly connected to every beat and breath.

The name Cobogó is inspired by the Brazilian modernist architectural element, also present in many ancient Islamic traditions, known for its ability to filter light and air. The duo’s music is precise yet fluid, structured yet open – a place where tradition and innovation meet.

Putten uit verschillende muzikale talen, van folktradities tot improvisatie en wereldwijde invloeden, beweegt het concert door contrasterende klankwerelden en onverwachte texturen, en nodigt het publiek uit in een intieme en voortdurend veranderende luisterervaring.

• Over de cellisten:

De Canadese cellist George Crotty ontwikkelde een eigenzinnige, grensverleggende cellotaal in de diverse muziekscene van Toronto. Zijn werk put uit jazztradities, post-bop en modale jazz, naast invloeden uit de Indiase raga en Arabische maqam – een moderne, genre-overstijgende benadering geworteld in nieuwsgierigheid en uitwisseling.

Ivan Nogueira presenteert werk uit zijn soloproject “On.Cello”, geworteld in Celtic-gekleurde folkloristische materialen en melodische vertelvormen, herwerkt voor solo cello. Het project, gestart in 2021, is een voortdurende persoonlijke verkenning van polyfonie, ritme, klank en de expressie van identiteit.
