1st Concert: Levantine Hues | Almaghoot Quintet
The Almaghoot Quintet is a boundary-defying ensemble where storytelling and tradition meet innovation. Founded by Syrian clarinetist and composer Ghaeth Almaghoot, the group brings together musicians from across Europe in a sincere and deeply personal musical dialogue between East and West.
Their debut album, Levantine Hues, is an intimate and evocative portrait of longing, memory and connection. Each composition is inspired by real-life interviews or drawn from Almaghoot’s own experiences. Through lyrical, microtonal soundscapes, the music gives voice to stories that are both deeply individual and universally human.
In a pioneering artistic leap, Almaghoot composes Arabic microtonal music for the bass clarinet — an instrument rarely used in this tradition. The result is a fresh sonic language that blends ancient Levantine modalities with modern improvisation, rich harmonies and bold textures.
With a unique line-up of clarinets, duduk, viola, guitar, double bass and percussion, the quintet weaves together Arabic and Middle Eastern melodies with jazz, chamber music and beyond. Their sound is at once grounded and exploratory, intimate and expansive.

2nd Concert: Raquel Kurpershoek
With her latest project Bienaventurada, Spanish Dutch vocalist Raquel Kurpershoek embarks on a new musical path. Inspired by the poetry of Mexican writer Amado Nervo, she journeys through Latin America in sound, while her flamenco roots continue to resonate.
Her compositions blend influences from Spain, Mexico, Egypt, Italy and Turkey into a sound that is both deeply personal and intimate. The music is narrative and richly textured, grounded in tradition yet open to the world. Following her successful debut album Nizami from 2022, in which she set love poetry by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi to music, she now presents her second album Bienaventurada. In this concert, Raquel shares the new work live with her quartet.
Raquel Kurpershoek previously won the Princess Christina Jazz Competition and received several international honors, including the International Prize, Best Music Award and Bianco d’Aponte Award at the Andrea Parodi World Music Festival in Italy. In 2023, she was awarded the Young Researchers Award by the Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters of Huelva.

Hun debuutalbum Levantine Hues is een intiem en sfeervol portret van verlangen, herinnering en verbondenheid. Elke compositie is geïnspireerd op echte interviews of komt voort uit
Almaghoots eigen ervaringen. In lyrische, microtonale klanklandschappen krijgen persoonlijke verhalen een stem die zowel individueel als universeel resoneert.
In een gedurfde, artistieke stap componeert Almaghoot Arabische microtonale muziek voor basklarinet – een instrument dat zelden in deze traditie wordt gebruikt. Het resultaat is een frisse muzikale taal die oude Levantijnse modaliteiten vermengt met moderne improvisatie, rijke harmonieën en gedurfde texturen.
Met een unieke bezetting van klarinetten, duduk, altviool, gitaar, contrabas en percussie weeft het kwintet Arabische en Midden-Oosterse melodieën samen met jazz, kamermuziek en meer. Hun geluid is tegelijk geaard en avontuurlijk, intiem en groots van opzet.

Met haar project Bienaventurada slaat de Spaans-Nederlandse zangeres Raquel Kurpershoek een nieuwe muzikale richting in. Geïnspireerd door de poëzie van de Mexicaanse schrijver Amado Nervo reist ze in haar muziek door Latijns-Amerika terwijl haar flamenco-roots hoorbaar blijven.
Haar composities mengen invloeden uit Spanje, Mexico, Egypte, Italië en Turkije tot een intiem en eigen geluid. De muziek is verhalend en gelaagd, diepgeworteld in traditie maar altijd open naar de wereld. Na het succesvolle debuutalbum Nizami (2022) waarin ze liefdesgedichten van de Perzische dichter Nizami Ganjavi op muziek zette, verscheen onlangs haar tweede album Bienaventurada. Tijdens dit concert presenteert Raquel samen met haar kwartet dit nieuwe werk.
Raquel Kurpershoek won eerder het Prinses Christina Jazz Concours en kreeg verschillende onderscheidingen zoals de International Prize, de Best Music Award en de Bianco d’Aponte Award op het Andrea Parodi World Music Festival in Italië. In 2023 ontving ze de Young Researchers Award van de Academie van Wetenschappen, Kunsten en Letteren van Huelva.
